Abstract

1302694 Fixing window door frames to cavity walls; damp courses; wall ties ECONA (G & B) PLASTICS Ltd 29 Dec 1969 [11 March 1969 7 July 1969] 12688/69 and 34191/ 69 Headings E1B and E1J A damp course for the end of a cavity wall at a door or window opening comprises a strip 36, 138 of corrosion-resistant, damp-proof material, e.g. plastics, which as seen in crosssection has a portion 40, 140 entering the cavity 34, 134 and having longitudinal undercut recesses 50, 142 wherein detachable steel wall ties 66, 144 may be anchored at any position along its length, and also has an outer portion which is secured to a stile, head or sill 38, 136 of a main frame of a window or door. The portion 40, 140 of the damp course is preferably hollow and open towards the frame stile 38, 136, providing a space 60 to prevent moisture creeping across the cavity between the wall and the frame, and the base 58 of the channel 40, 140 is formed with shallow longitudinal grooves 56 which act as moisture traps. The recesses 50, 142 for wall ties are preferably dovetailed. The outer portion secured to the frame may comprise flanges 46, 48 (Fig. 8) or, for metal frames, it may hold a wooden insert 156 to which the frame may be secured (Fig. 7); in either case, the frame is spaced from the wall. Various modifications of the cross-sectional shape of the damp course strip are described. The method of installing the damp course comprises securing lengths of the damp course strip to the stiles of the frame, positioning the frame on the sill, and building up the leaves of the wall on either side of the cavity-entering portion, wall ties being attached between courses as required, and mortar 64 squeezed out from between the bricks engaging in the recesses 50, 142.
