The main and sash frames of a window are comprised of hollow closed plastics material frame members of T-Z or L section, in which the inner surfaces of the walls 11, 12, 13, 14 are provided with longitudinally extending ribs 16 which may be offset on the opposite walls and at least two opposite sides of the hollow members are of double wall construction with the two walls 14, 23, or 12, 42 connected by intermediate walls 24, 25 or 43 and end walls 19, 20 or 44, 45 to form a plurality of chambers 28-30 in the cross bar and these walls are provided with perforations or slits 31, 32, 33, 34 or 48, 49, 50, and the inner wall 22 of the crossbar 18 is formed as an abutment shoulder constituted by a wall portion 38 connected at its end by a wall 40 with perforation 41, to the adjacent wall 13, and forming an auxiliary chamber connected to the end chamber 30 of the cross bar. The member may be reinforced by pushing into the hollow member a profiled hollow or solid bar 17 and drainage water is drained away through the perforations as indicated by the broken lines Xl and X2 in Fig 8. The end walls of the side 12 opposite the crossbar 18 have two arms, one of which viz 51 and 55 is formed as a tapering rib, and at one end the arms terminate flush with the adjacent wall 11 of the main portion of the member, the other side projecting beyond its adjacent wall 13 to act as an abutment surface. Rectangular recesses 37 in the cross bar 18 and 106 in the glazing bar 100 fitted into the recess 54 by a correspondingly shaped part 108 on the glazing bar 100 (Fig. 8), retain the ends of a U-shaped clamping strap 140 which carries a packing strip 141 on which the glazing unit 115 is mounted in the T-shaped sash 111 which cooperates with a T-shaped main frame 110 secured to a U-section anchor plate 130 by the arms thereof 131, 132 engaging in the grooves 54 and 37 of the frame member, the anchor plate 130 being adjustable by bolts 136 on another anchor 134 secured in the wall surrounding the window aperture, the sill 127 being fastened to the adjustable anchor. The sash 111 when not flush with the main frame as in Fig. 7 not shown has a weather board 116 attached thereto to cover the abutment surfaces of sash and frame. A frame is assembled by sliding the main portion 10 on to suitably profiled corner pieces, the frame members being mitred and pushing further reinforcing bars into the angle members and held together by means of plug connections.
