(Cl. 189-75) The present invention relates to a metal frame for use in building construction and more particularly to a frame constructed so as to aid masons in placing bricks or concrete blocks or wood studs adjacent the sides of the frame in such manner as to assure that a groove of predetermined size will be provided between the frame and the bricks or blocks orstuds to receive a caulking compound, and to also provide space at the top and bottom of the frame for receiving caulking compound so that the frame can be completely encircled with such compound.
For purposes of illustration, the frame is disclosed herein in the form of a window frame for sliding sash, but it is to be understood that the principles involved in constructing said window frame are equally applicable to door frames, easements, etc.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a frame adapted to be quickly set in a building structure, and including positive means for limiting the positioning of building construction elements, such as bricks, blocks, wood studs, etc. along the side members of the frame so as -to provide a groove of a substantially uniform width along the sides of the frame adapted to receive a caulking compound.
Another object is to provide a frame constructed so that it will enable a mason to more quickly lay bricks, etc. along its side edges and at the same time provide for uniform spacing of the bricks etc. from the outer face of the side members of the frame, whereby to provide a caulking groove of a predetermined substantially uniform width.
A further object is to provide a frame having means along the side faces thereof projecting laterally therefrom, which may have a sharp edge so that it will cut into any fresh mortar that may be present along the edge of a brick, etc., and serve as an abutment therefor and thereby enable the brick etc. to be laid in desired relation to the adjacent face of the side members of the frame without hindrance by the mortar.
A more specific object is to provide a window frame having outwardly projecting ribs or abutments on the outer face of its side frame members and extending lengthwise thereof and spaced inwardly from one edge of said side members to provide caulking grooves, together with means cooperable with the ribs or abutments for retaining a caulking compound in place in such grooves.
Other objects and features of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a sliding sash type "ice the bottom member of the window frame taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to Fig. 1, the window frame is generally identified by the numeral 1 and is shown mounted in a fragment of a brick building generally identified by the numeral 2. The window frame 1 comprises side frame members 3 and 4, preferably made of extruded aluminum alloy of predetermined shape and disposed in confronting relation. A top member 5 is disposed at the upper end of the side frame members 3 and 4 and a bottom member 6 is disposed at the lower end of said side members. The top member 5 and the bottom member 6 are also preferably made from extruded aluminum alloy shapes of predetermined configuration. The manner in whichthe top and bottom members 5 and 6 are secured to the side frame members 3 and 4 is not shown herein and constitutes no part of the present invention, but is fully disclosed in my copending application, Serial No. 365,053, filed June 30, 1953.
The side frame members 3 and 4 are identical in transverse cross section and each side member comprises a main transverse wall 7, and a wall 8 disposed perpendicular thereto along its inner edge and having a lip 9 disposed in the same plane as the wall 8 but projecting inwardly from the inner face of the main wall 7. The opposite edge of the main wall 7 has a somewhat similar lip 10, which projects in the opposite direction, or outwardly, a slight distance and is adapted to aid in retaining caulking compound 11 in place, ,as will be described more fully hereinafter. A sash guide 12 projects from the inner face of the main wall 7 at a point spaced inwardly from the lip 10 and is adapted to cooperate with a parting bead 13 on a removable rail or track R, which serves as a guide for a lower sash 14 and an upper sash 15. The rails R are engaged with the inner face of the side frame members 3 and 4 and are disposed between the sash guides 12 and the lips 9, which retain said rails in proper position with respect to their associated side members. Each rail R is secured in place by a plurality of screws 16.
Webs 17 and 18 are disposed in parallel, spaced relation along the outer face of the side frame members 3 and 4 and are adapted to be received within a channel member 19, which may be conveniently secured thereto in any desired manner. The webs 17, 18 and the channel 19 serve as a means for mounting or anchoring the window frame 1 in the wall of the building structure 2. A section of metal trim 20 is positioned so that a flange 21 thereof engages one leg of the channel members 19 and a web 22 engages the outer edge of the walls 8 of the side frame members 3 and 4. If desired, the trim 20 may be preassembled with the window frame at the time that it is mounted in the building structure 2 and thus avoid the necessity of later adding trim, as 'is done in conventional building practice.
A rib or abutment 23 projects outwardly from the outer face of each side frame member 3 and 4 and is spaced inwardly from the outer edge or lip 10 a substantial distance to provide a bottom wall for a caulking groove 24 of a desired depth, the portion of the Wall 7 between the rib 23 and lip 10 serving as a side wall for the groove. The height of the rib 23 is substantially greater than that of the lip 10 and predetermines the width of the caulking groove 24. It will be noted that the rib 23 is quite thin and has a narrow bevelled ridge 25, which is directly engaged by bricks 26 and serves as an abutment to positively limit the spacing of the bricks 26 from the outer face of the walls 7 of the side frame members 3 and 4. In one operative example of the invention, the rib 23 is A of an inch in height and sets back A of an inch from the outer face of the bead 10. The bead 10 is of an inch in height and both the 3 bead 1t and the rib 23 are of an inch thick. However, these dimensions may be varied and made more or less within reasonable limits without losing the benefits of the invention.
The rib 23 is disposed perpendicular to the general plane of the side frame members 3 and 4 and its bevelled ridge 25 is adapted to penetrate any fresh mortar that might be present along the edge 27 of the brick and thus permit the edge 27 of the brick to be brought into direct contact with the bevelled ridge 2.5 to property position the brick so that the brick forms a third or side Wall for the groove or pocket 24 to receive the caulking compound 11, previously referred to. Any mortar that may inadvertently enter the groove 24 as a brick 2-6 is placed in position can be readily removed immediately by the mason. A small amount of mortar left in place will not reduce the effectiveness of the caulking conpound 11.
Referring now to Fig. 3, an angle shaped member 28 is mounted upon the top member and may be fixedly secured thereto in any suitable manner, as by welding any surfaces thereof engaged with the member 5. The angle member 28 has an upwardly extending flange 29 adapted to be positioned between two angle iron liutel members 3% and 31 placed back-to-back with the flange 29 disposed therebetween, whereby to firmly anchor the top member 5 in the wall. The member 28 also has a horizontal flange 32 adapted to cooperate with the lower base of the flange 33 of the lintel 30 to provide a groove 34 for the reception of caulking compound 35. Bricks 36 are laid in mortar 37 disposed above the respective lintels 39 and 31, in the usual manner. The lintel 3 1 is concealed on the inner side of the Window frame 1 by metallic trim indicated at 38.
Referring to Fig. 4,. the bottom member 6 has a depending web 39 which rests upon a row of bricks 4-8. A second web 41, of less depth than the web 39 is ar ranged at the inner face of the bottom member 5 and piece of metallic trim 42 is disposed in engagement with the row of bricks 40 and the webs 39 and 41. The bottom member 6 has a downwardly extending web 43 at the front face thereof which terminates in an inwardly extending flange 44. The flange 44 cooperates with a sill 45 to provide a space to receive caulking compound 46. Thus, the window frame 1 is scaled around its entire perimeter by: the caulking compound 11 which extends for the full height of the side frame members 3 and 4; the caulking compound 35 which extends along the full length of the top member 5; and the caulking compound 46 which extends along the full length of the bottom member 6.
It will be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction of the window frame members disclosed herein without departing from the principles of the invention or the scope of the annexed claims.
I claim:
1. A frame, comprising: a pair of laterally spaced side frame members arranged in confronting relation; a top member and a bottom member disposed at the opposite ends of said side members; and means projecting outwardly from each of said side frame members in opposite directions, said means extending longitudinally along the outer face of each of-said side frame members, and said means being spaced inwardly from one corresponding edge of their respective associated side frame member and having a ridge adapted to serve as an abutment for aiding in positioning building construction elements in substantially uniformly spaced relation to the outer face of said side frame members, said ridges and the adjacent portion of said side frame members being co-operable with said construction elements to pro vide an outwardly opening groove of substantially uniform width along each of said side frame members adapted to receive a caulking compound.
2. A frame as defined in claim 1, including means rejecting outwardly from said one edge of said side frame members for aiding in retaining the caulking compound in place.
A frame, comprising: a pair of laterally spaced members arranged in confronting relation; a top member and a bottom member disposed at the opposite ends of said side members, each of said side frame members having a rib extending lengthwise along cc and projecting laterally in opposite direccfron and spaced inwardly from one corresponding thereof, the outer edge of the rib of each side frame member being adapted to be engaged by construction elements and to serve as an abutment to maintain said elements spaced from the outer face of the side frame members, said ridges and adjacent portions of said side frame members being co-operable with said construction elements to provide a groove along the side frame members to receive a caulking compound.
4. A window frame, comprising: a pair of laterally spaced side frame members arranged in confronting relation; a top member and a bottom member disposed at the opposite ends of said side frame members, each of sa d side frame members having a thin bevelled edge rib extending lengthwise along its outer face and pro jccting substantially perpendicularly therefrom and spaced inwardly from one edge thereof, the outer edge of said ribs being adapted to be engaged by bricks and to serve as an abutment to maintain said bricks spaced from the outer faces of said side frame members to provide a groove along said side frame members to receive a caulking compound.
5. A window frame as defined in claim 4, having means disposed inwardly of but parallel with said ribs of said side frame members and projecting outwardly therefrom to a point well beyond said ribs and adapted to serve to anchor said side frame members in a wall.
6. A window frame, comprising: a pair of side frame members arranged in confronting relation; a top memher and a bottom member disposed at the opposite ends of said side frame members, each of said side frame members having a thin rib extending lengthwise along its outer face and projecting substantially perpendicularly therefrom and spaced inwardly from one edge of said side frame members, each of said side frame members also having a lip projecting therefrom in the same direction as said ribs, said ribs being of greater height than said lips and being adapted to be engaged by the ends of bricks and to serve as an abutment to maintain said bricks spaced from the outer face of said side frame members to provide a groove along said side frame members for a caulking compound, said lips being adapted to serve as a retaining means for aiding in retaining said caulking compound in said grooves.
7. A window frame as defined in claim 6, in which the ribs have a bevelled ridge.
