Abstract

1301469 Making profiled sections; seaming RAPENA PATENTUND VERWALTUNGS AG 20 Aug 1970 [28 Aug 1968] 40179/70 Headings B3A B3E and B3J [Also in Division E1] A method of forming a hollow rail comprises drawing two metal bands through freely rotatable rolls so as to form one band 4 into a downwardly facing U-shaped profile having flanges 21 and 22, Fig. 8, and the other band 5 into a shallow downwardly facing U-shaped profile having laterally extending edges 26, 27, Fig. 10a, with beads 28 and 29, providing the flanges 21, 22 with non-metallic elastic liners 33 and 34 and joining the profiled bands by bending the bands 28 and 29 around the liner covered flanges 21 and 22. The two bands are passed through a greasing station and then through knurling rolls which knurl the upper and lower sides of the longitudinal edges of band 4 and the upper side of the longitudinal edges of band 5. The bands are bent to the required shape by the freely rotating bending rolls after which the liners 33 and 34 are drawn off reels, opened by deflectors 35 and 36, Fig. 81, and guided on to flanges 21 and 22. The profiled bands are then brought together so that the beads 28 and 29 can be gradually bent around the liner covered flanges 21 and 22 by freely rotatable bending rolls and finally pressed into the liner by rolls 44, Fig. 12, thus forming a welt having no metallic contact between the two bands. The bands are drawn from the formed end by a drawing station (Fig. 19, not shown) having a clamp which is moved by the rotation of a lead screw. In another form, Fig. 21, the drawing device comprises two endless roller chains 48, 49 having claws 52, 53 with buffers 59, 60, and 61 so that under the action of biasing spring 56 and 57 the buffers engage the flanges of the formed rail. In a modification of the latter drawing device the buffers 59 and 60 are mounted on pivoted arms which are inclined in the direction of movement of the rail so that movement of the chain 48 produces a clamping force. Swivel cutters are provided to separate a hollow rail either with a cut perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the rail or a mitre cut. Other shapes of formed rails are given (Figs. 23 and 31, not shown).
