Abstract

130,143. Hirst, G. A. July 23, 1918. Gyroscopic apparatus.-Apparatus for indicating both longitudinal and lateral inclination of aircraft comprises a motor-driven gyroscope pivotally mounted on two axes at right-angles, the movements of the frame of the instrument relatively to the axes being indicated on concentric dials. The gyroscope comprises a fixed armature L and a rotating yoke ring T with magnet cores and coils on its inner surface, mounted on a shaft K fixed to a shaft H pivoted at G, G, in a pivoted frame D. Current is supplied to the motor through a brush Z and ring V connected by a cable to a second brush W and ring U and thence to an insulated brush-holder N and ring Q, the return being through a ring Q1, brush P, and the frame of the instrument. The pivot E, of the frame D carries a dial 9 having a pointer co-operating with an outer concentric dial 10, and the shaft H is connected by bevel gearing 1, 2 and chain gearing 4, 5, 6 to a shaft 7 carrying a pointer 8 co-operating with the inner dial 9.
