Rotary machines; supports.-In earth-inductor compasses, the rotary-coil generator or the commutator brushes are gyrostatically stabilized. The armature 51, Fig. 4, commutator 59 and brushes 77, 78 may be mounted in a gimbal suspension on a turntable 55 rotatable on the aircraft or other vessel for course-setting and controlling. The armature 51 is rotated by means of a turbine wheel 56 and air-jet 57. The connections to the brushes pass through slip-rings 79, 80. In a modification, the armature is rotated about an horizontal axis on the table 55 and the brushes are carried by a pendulum swinging about this axis, and damped and stabilized by an air-driven gyroscope. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), comprises also a modification in which an armature 25, Fig. 1 (Cancelled), of standard form with one, two or more coils is mounted in a gimbal suspension, is rotated in the earth's field about a vertical axis Z by an air turbine 6, 7 and is connected through commutator segments 21 - - 24 and brushes 27 - - 30 to a moving-magnet multi-coil indicating instrument the deflection in which depends on the ratio of the voltages at pairs of opposite brushes. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
