Abstract

359,071. Gyroscopic apparatus. BROWN, S. G., Western Avenue, North Acton, Middlesex. July 25, 1930, No. 22488. [Class 97 (iii).] In a gyroscopic indi. cator, eddy currents formed in a mass of metal on the gyro rotor by a stationary magnetic system are adapted to restore the gyro axis to a desired direction. In the form shown, the rotor 1 is mounted by bearings 2 in a frame 3 supported by a gimbal mounting 4 in a casing 5. The rotor spindle 6 is fitted with a dished copper disc 7 adapted to coact with a pot type electromagnet 8, 9 fixed in the casing 5. The action of the device is to bring the gyro axis and central pole 8 of the magnet into alignment. The gyroscope may be used to indicate pitch and movement in azimuth of aircraft, the frame 4 being provided with a pointer optical or otherwise, co-operating with a scale on the casing 5.
