Abstract
120,743. Guise, H. J. Feb. 28, 1918. Aerial machines with or without aerostats; propelling; steering.-A propelling-unit for aircraft comprises a screw propeller a, Fig. 1, rotating within an annular shell d carried by spider arms e and links p from a tube g, which is connected to cssings f, k providing bearings h, j for the shaft b driven by a motor c. The casing k is fixed to the motor and mounted on trunnions q, about which the unit as a whole may be adjusted. Fig. 3 shows a machine having a central unit r fixed with its shaft vertical, four units s<1>, s<2>, &c. adjustable about trunnions q, and an horizontal tube u fitted with a tractor unit. The units s<1>, s<2>, &c. are driven by electric motors v', v<2>, &c. and are adjusted by means of levers w', w<2>, &c. connected by rods x<1> to cranks y' on a shaft z. An auxiliary engine is provided for starting the main engines and for driving an electric generator. Supporting-planes or a gas-envelope may be provided. The propelling-units may be used for raising aeroplanes rapidly.
