Abstract

28,015. Steinhaus, E. E. Dec. 23. Aerial machines without aerostats; aeroplanes; propelling; steeringÀ- Upon the car A, which tapers in width from the middle to the ends, is mounted a pair of uprights B, B<1> supporting in an inclined position a fixed shaft C on which are mounted on ball bearings the hubs g of the supporting-aeroplanes G, G'. These comprise a series of planes g' arranged radially around the hubs g, with intermediate planes g<2> extending from the ring g<3>, the whole being braced by bars or cables g<4>. The journaling of the aeroplanes maintains the machine in equilibrium when turning. A series of four propellers d<11> is mounted on the arms of a spider D secured to the shaft C, and driven by bevel-gearing d<8>, d<7> and shafts d<6> from the shaft C', which rotates about the shaft C under the influence of the motor F secured to the uprights B. The horizontal rudder I is adapted to be adjusted by the threaded rod i working in a nut universally mounted in a casing i<1>, Fig. 6. The vertical rudder L is adjustable by cables l<3> passing throughthe shaft C and secured to the chain l<7> running over the spocket-wheel l<8> on the shaft l<9>. A suitable device l<12> is provided for locking the shaft l<9> in any adjustment. The uprights B, B<1> may be adjustable and adapted to be simultaneously operated so as to vary the angle of inclination and consequently the rate of ascent or descent.
