Abstract

1300505 Polyepoxide-polyamide reaction products CIBA-GEIGY AG 19 April 1971 [6 Feb 1970 7 Jan 1971] 21168/71 Heading C3B [Also in Divisions D1-D2] Water soluble or water dispersible products are prepared by reaction, in an organic solvent at up to 95‹ C., of polyepoxides (I), fatty amines (II) and basic polyamides (III). I and II are first reacted in an epoxy/amine group equivalent ratio of 1 : 0À1 to 1 : 0À85. The epoxy group containing product is then reacted with III, which is prepared by reaction of a polymeric unsaturated fat acid (IV) and a polyalkylenepolyamine (V), in an equivalent ratio of epoxy groups of 1 : 1 to 1 : 6. Acid is added, not later than on completion of the reaction, so that the product on dilution with water has a pH of 2-8. I may be a polyglycidyl ether of bisphenol A. II may have tne formula in which x=11-23. IV may be dimerized to trimerized linoleic or linolenic acid. V may be (n= 1, 2 or 3). Reaction may take place in an organic solvent which is infinitely miscible with water, e.g. 2-butoxyethanol or isopropanol. Also present in the reaction mixture may be a monofunctional or difunctional compound different from I and III, e.g. epichlorohydrin. Uses.-Treating wool, especially to make it non-felting and for sizing paper.
