Abstract

1280106 Epoxy amine reaction products CIBA-GEIGY AG 5 May 1970 [7 May 1969] 21596/70 Heading C3B [Also in Divisions D1 and D2] Stable reaction products are obtained by reacting (I) a polyglycidyl ether of a polyhydric phenol, which is liquid at room temp., with (II) an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic diprimary amine at 100-120‹ C. in the absence of solvents. From 3-5À5 amine group equivalents of II are used per epoxide group equivalent of I. The resultant product is then reacted at <100‹C., in the presence of a solvent (III) with an epoxy compound (IV) in a ratio of 2-5 amine equivalents per epoxide equivalent of IV. Not later than the completion of reaction, an acid, e.g. acetic acid or formic acid, is added so that the product has a pH of 2-8 on dilution with water. I may be a polyglycidyl ether of bisphenol A having an epoxide content of at least 5 epoxide group equivalents per kg. II may be a cycloaliphatic amine containing a saturated 5- or 6-membered carbocyclic ring, a H 2 N-group bonded to a ring carbon atom and a H 2 NCH 2 group bonded to another ring carbon atom, e.g. 3,3,5-trimethyl-1- amino-3-aminomethylcyclohexane or 1-amino-2- aminomethylcyclopentane. III may be solvent which is completely miscible with water, e.g. the n-butyl mono ether of ethylene glycol. The products are useful in rendering wool non-felting and as sizing agents in paper manufacture.
