Abstract

1285484 Epoxide-amine reaction products CIBA-GEIGY AG 1 June 1970 [13 June 1969 13 Aug 1969] 26413/70 Heading C3B [Also in Divisions D1-D2] Stable compositions are obtained by reaction of: (A) a reaction product of a polyepoxide (I) with an organic polycarboxylic acid (II) in an equivalent ratio of epoxide groups to acid groups of 1 : 0À1 to 1 : 0À8; and (B) either an amine (III) which contains at least two amino groups, each of which contain at least one nitrogen bonded hydrogen atom, or a reaction product (IV) of a polyepoxide and III with an equivalent ratio of amino hydrogen atoms to epoxide groups of 3 : 1 to 11 : 1. (A) and (B) are reacted in an organic solvent (V) with an equivalent ratio of epoxide groups to amine nitrogen of 1 : 2 to 1 : 10. Acid (VI) is added, not later than after completion of the reaction so that a sample of the reaction mixture has a pH of 2 to 8 after dilution with water. I may be a polyglycidyl ether of bisphenol A having an epoxide content of at least 5 epoxide group equivalents per kg. II may be an ethylenically unsaturated dimeric to trimeric fatty acid, a C 2-10 aliphatic acid or an aromatic dicarboxylic acid. III may be an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or heterocyclic polyamine, e.g. H 2 N(CH 2 CH 2 NH) n CH 2 CH 2 NH 2 , where n= 1, 2 or 3, 3,5,5-trimethyl-amino-3-aminomethylcyclohexane or 1-amino-3-aminomethylcyclopentane. IV may be obtained by reacting the same epoxide as in step (A) with III. V is preferably a solvent which is infinitely miscible with water, e.g. 2-butoxyethanol. Examples of VI are acetic acid and formic acid. Reaction may take place at 40-70‹ C. The products are useful in treating wool to render it non-felting.
