Abstract
1299929 Blade shrouding DEFENCE, SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 19 April 1971 [10 April 1970] 17153/70 Heading FIT A gas turbine rotor comprises a ring of blades 13 attached to a hub or shaft (not shown) and rotatable about the axis of the hub or shaft, the tips of the blades being connected to a shroud ring 14 by a resilient material deformable in shear to cater for differential expansion between the blades and the shroud ring. Blocks 17 of resilient material (natural or artificial rubber) covered by glass semiforced plastics sheets 18 and 19 are mounted between tip mounting pads 15, 16 and a sheet metal spat 20, attached to the shroud ring 14 by a locating pin 21. Each pin has a shear neck at 23 which will break under large stress e.g. due to bird strikes. The spats 20 are additionally connected to the blades by pins (not shown) which pass through oversize holes in the blade tips to retain the spats if the resilient connection fails. The shroud ring 14 may be formed from carbon fibres in resin.
