Abstract

1299076 Hydrodesulphurizing hydrocarbons IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 16 March 1970 [10 April 1969] 18387/69 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] A hydrocarbon feedstock containing sulphur derivatives of hydrocarbons is desulphurized by passing it together with hydrogen at 300- 450‹ C. over a catalyst formed by reducing and/or sulphiding a precursor composition comprising alumina, a Group VI metal oxide and a non-noble Group VIII metal oxide compressed together in cylindrical shapes having a density of under 1À2 g./c.c. and a mean vertical crushing strength of at least 280 p.s.i. (see Division B1). Specified feedstocks are naphthas of boiling range 30-220‹ C., heavy naphthas, kerosines and gas oils. The catalyst is also said to be suitable for the selective hydrogenation of acetylenes in olefines. In the examples: (i) vaporized n-heptane containing 100 p.p.m. w/v. sulphur as thiophene is treated together with hydrogen at a hydrogen to hydrocarbon mole ratio of 0À25, a liquid heptane space velocity of 0À75 hr.<SP>-1</SP> at 390‹ C. and atmospheric pressure; and (ii) a naphtha of boiling range 30-170‹ C. containing 100-110 p.p.m. w/v. sulphur as thiophene is treated at a H 2 /hydrocarbon ratio of 0À25, a liquid space velocity of 1 hr.<SP>-1</SP>, 370‹ C. and 450 p.s.i.g.
