Abstract
1298397 Sealing glass PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 April 1970 [12 April 1969] 16894/70 Heading C1M [Also in Division H1] Glass is heated inside a closed vessel by irradiating it with a laser beam to raise its temperature to over 1000‹ C. In the drawing a quartz discharge lamp 33 is mounted on a table within a vessel 13 which can be evacuated through a conduit 39 and supplied with a desired gas through a conduit 38. The beam from a laser 1 is reflected by a mirror 12 and focused by a germanium lens 15 in the wall of the vessel on to the exhaust/filler tube 35 of the lamp, thereby raising its temperature to 1400‹ C. so that it fuses and seals. The beam is then switched off or interrupted by a screen or by a Kerr cell or by moving the mirror 12. The laser is preferably of the carbon dioxide type, which produces infra-red radiation of 10À6 microns wavelength. The walls 16 and 17 of the vessel 13 are hinged so that articles to be treated may be introduced through one side and removed through the other. The beam may be directed at a different angle from that shown, and a plurality of beams may be employed. The method may also be applied to sealing an incandescent lamp.
