Abstract

1385393 Welding by fusion AVCO CORP 8 Nov 1972 [30 Dec 1971] 51571/72 Heading B3R In laser beam welding, a cloud created by interaction of the beam and the workpiece, and capable of absorbing and scattering the beam, is substantially swept away, during beam/workpiece relative movement, by gas blown through the beam slightly spaced from the zone of said interaction and preferably parallel to the workpiece. Gas used may be argon or nitrogen and may act as shielding gas to prevent oxidation. The laser may be continuous wave, e.g. gas dynamic or electrical discharge, or pulsed. The sweeping away of the cloud is for laser average powers exceeding 8 kW. Stainless and killed carbon steel workpieces are referred to. As shown, a beam 14 from a laser 11 is transmitted through a Cassegrain optical system 12 comprising elements 13, 16 and focussed on workpieces 15, 17. Either the workpieces are movable on a conventional table or the beam may be moved optically by a conventional mirror system in the system 12. Gas from a bottle 20 is metered at 21 and directed by a nozzle 22 through the beam. In Fig. 2 (not shown) a cylindrical copper gas nozzle emits less than 3 grams per second argon close and preferably parallel to the workpiece but at an acute angle to the weld joint line. In Fig. 3 (not shown) a rectangular cross-section nozzle emits less than 30 grams per second argon parallel to the workpiece and at right angles to the weld joint line.
