Abstract
1405487 Cutting and welding by fusion THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 12 Sept 1973 [26 Sept 1972] 44494/72 Headings B3V and B3R [Also in Divisions B5 and G2] A workpiece is treated with laser radiation by focusing a beam of the radiation passing through each one of at least two mutually exclusive areas of the cross-section of the beam at a respective point 14, 15. In one embodiment, a parallel beam of laser radiation is passed through a converging lens 11 and a bi-prism 12 to produce two focal points 14, 15 on the workpiece. The position of the points 14, 15 may be varied by altering the distance between the lens 11 and bi-prism 12 whilst the amount of radiation received at each point 14, 15 can be varied by laterally moving the bi-prism 12. In other embodiments, three focal points are produced by replacing the bi-prism 12 by two spaced prisms (22, 23) (Fig. 2, not shown), or five focal points are produced by using four prisms (32-35) (Fig. 3, not shown) or nine focal points are produced by using four prisms (42-45) (Fig. 4, not shown) arranged in two pairs which are perpendicular to each other one below the other. One or more converging members 11 may be used to deviate the radiation away from the incident beam or to produce focal points which do not lie in the same plane. The workpiece may be metal or silica and may be bored, cut or welded by the laser radiation.
