Abstract

1297756 Explosive compositions FRANCE ARMED FORCES MINISTER OF 19 April 1971 [13 April 1970] 26856/71 Heading C1D An explosive composition comprises particles of an explosive material dispersed in an elastomeric binder derived from one or more carboxylic polydiolefines, for example a carboxylic butadiene, and one or more chain extending and/or cross-linking agents. The polydiolefine contains at least two carboxyl groups per molecule and the chain extending agent at least two groups capable of reacting with the carboxyl groups. The elastomeric binder constitutes at least 8% by weight of the composite explosive. The explosive material may be octogen (which may be graphitized), hexogen, P.E.T.N., tetryl, or T.N.T. Other ingredients may be potassium or ammonium perchlorate as an oxidizing agent, aluminium or magnesium powder to produce a visual or incendiary effect or a whistling sound, dioctyl azelate or liquid polybutadiene as a plasticizer, 2,2<SP>1</SP>-bis-methylene- (4 - methyl - 6 - tert. - butylphenol), di - 2,6- tert.-butyl-p-cresol, or a mixture of nonyl phenyl phosphites as an antioxidant, and red lead to modify the detonation. Suitable chainextending or cross-linking agents for the carboxylic polydiolefines are bis-cyclopentadiene dioxide and epoxy compounds formed from triols, liquid polybutadienes, soya oils, or vinyl cyclohexene. Catalysts may be used to accelerate the cross-linking, for example acetylacetonates, metal alkyls, resorcylates, laurates, 2- ethyl hexanoates, or naphthenates of Fe, Pb, Sn, or Co. Also present may be wetting agents, for example a polytrifluorochloroethylene wax, lanolin, lecithin, sodium dioctylsuccinate, or chloronaphthalene. The ingredients may be kneaded together under vacuum, vibrated under vacuum to remove gas bubbles while being cast, and then cured, all these operations being carried out at not above 95‹ C.
