Abstract

1296991 Rolling mills ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 19 Feb 1970 [28 Feb 1969] 10778/69 Heading B3M [Also in Division B2] Apparatus for spraying back-up rollers 28 of a rolling mill with a lubricant to protect the work rolls 20 comprises a spray nozzle 31 which projects a divergent stream of lubricant, the arrangement being such that the nozzle can be moved towards and away from a roller and the flow-rate increases as the nozzle moves away and decreases as the nozzle moves nearer so that a uniform coating of lubricant per unit area is provided. The arrangement is provided to accomodate different widths of work passing between the work rollers 20, 21. The nozzle is reciprocated by a piston and cylinder 35 and moves in a shroud 39. A plate 40 with nylon edge 42 is provided to keep water from jets 30 away from the lubricant spray. The timing and area covered by the spraying can be controlled manually or automatically. It is arranged that no lubricant is supplied until the leading part of the workpiece is firmly gripped between the rollers and as the end of the workpiece approaches the spray is cut off so that the work rollers are free of lubricant for the next workpiece to be gripped. A carrier liquid, usually water, is sprayed continously and this helps to clean the work rollers. When it is required to begin spraying, the lubricant is introduced in to the water flow thus achieving a practically instantaneous cut off point for starting and stopping. A suitable liquid is stated to be an ester having a quaternary carbon atom in its molecule such as pentathaerithrytol tetraoleate in admixture with partially esterified pentaerithrytol and free carboxylic acids.
