Abstract
1277830 Descaling steel NIPPON KOKAN KK 4 Dec 1970 [8 Dec 1969] 57684/70 Heading B3D A method for descaling steel comprises spraying a mixture of powdered solids, gas and liquid on to the steel at a velocity in excess of 30 metres per sec., the ratio of liquid to gas being within the range 1 : 1 to 5 : 1 and the ratio of solid to gas being within the range 5 : 1 to 15 : 1. In one arrangement, powder 6, Fig. 1, and liquid 7 are supplied to a mixing tank 1 and gas 8 is added to a surge tank 2 and carries the powder and liquid to a nozzle 4 where it is mixed with high pressure gas 9 and jetted on to steel sheet 5. In another arrangement powder 10, Fig. 2, is carried from a tank 3 by gas 11, 12 to a nozzle 4 and jetted by high pressure liquid 13 on to the sheet 5. A nozzle for use in the method has mean A for receiving high pressure gas or high pressure gas and powder, and means B for receiving the powder and liquid or liquid according to which arrangement is used, the materials being mixed at C for jetting through opening 14. The particles of the powder have a diameter less than 0.5 mm. The steel sheet may be at a temperature of 1200 C. the method, in addition to descaling the sheet, also effecting cooling thereof, or the steel may have a temperature of 300 to 600 C. and can be inspected at the same time. The method may be used during rolling of the sheet and may also be used for cleaning, sand stripping of moulding, and removing rust and coating agents from forged billets.
