1295564 Applying dust jackets to books W SIGLOCH 19 April 1971 [21 Feb 1970] 23855/71 Heading B8C In a machine for applying dust jackets S to books B, a dust jacket is precreased by hot embossing to form vertical side flaps K1, K2, a book is placed back downwards on to the jacket, one cover D1 of the book is opened, the flap K1 folded about that cover D1, the remainder of the book is closed on to the cover D1, the other book cover D2 is opened, and the flap K2 folded about that cover D2. The dust jacket S is fed from a stack 10 by suction grippers (not shown) to tongs 11 which carry the jacket to an embossing station 12 where the jacket is precreased by inclined heated blades 15 which press the jacket against resilient cushions 14. The jacket is then carried by chain-driven pushers 22 to a position beneath a book-delivery shoot 26, one side of the jacket being raised by a support-plate 24 opposite the shoot 26. A book B is fed down the shoot 26 by a mechanism 28 and is then supported above the jacket by a channel 28, and the cover D1 of the book is opened by a suction gripper 29. The pushers 22 then move the book and the jacket past a cranked hollow rail 30 which folds the flap K1 around the cover D1, the flap being brushed on to the cover by air from nozzles in the rail 30. At this position the channel 18 terminates so that the book B comes to abut the jacket S. The book is then turned on to the cover D1 by a guide rail 32, the other side of the jacket is raised by a guide (33, Figs. 6, 7) and the cover D2 is opened on to the raised side of the jacket by guides 34. A hollow pneumatic rail 35 folds the flap K2 about the cover D2 and the book is closed on to the cover D2 by a roller 36. The jacketed book is then fed to a discharge conveyer 38.
