Abstract

1481277 Applying loose covers to books SCHULER BROS Inc 26 June 1975 [28 June 1974] 27043/75 Heading B8C [Also in Division B6] Apparatus for forming loose jackets and applying them to the opened covers of books comprises suction cup separators and a belt conveyer 51 for withdrawing blanks from a stack 17 on a raisable platform 35. Means are provided at station 52 for folding the blanks into jackets each having a central portion flanked by two flaps, and intermittently operating belts 53 with entrainment means 53a to feed the jackets from station 52 to an assembly station 54 where they envelop the covers of a book held open during transport from an inspection station 97. The books, transported on a relatively slow conveyer belt 40 from the manual inspection station 97 to a fast conveyer belt 49, are engaged during such transport by guides (41), (42), (43), (44) Fig. 1 (not shown), which hold the leaves of the books vertical and their covers horizontal on the belts 40, 49. The jackets are engaged by guides, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), which ensure that the flaps are correctly positioned for enveloping the covers at station 54. When such envelopment has taken place, pivotable arms 78, 78a, 79, 79a, Fig. 11, are raised to hold the flaps against the insides of the covers and close the books. Platform 76, at station 54, is then tilted to deposit the jacketed books down a shoot 38 where a stop 39 aligns the jackets on the books before the books are moved laterally to a delivery station. Alternatively, the jacketed books are deposited on a vibrating platform. Making loose covers.-The blanks on the intermittently operating belts 53 are creased between fixed and movable folding members, one pair of which are shown at 58, 60, Fig. 6. The members may be heated. Pressure plates, e.g. 62, facilitate the folding. The apparatus can be made automatic in operation, photoelectric sensors and limit switches controlling actuation of pneumatic and electric motors which drive the movable parts of the apparatus, in dependence upon the presence and positions of blanks, jackets, and books in the apparatus. Warning lights are also provided to indicate malfunction.
