Abstract

1,224,317. Bag filling machines. REED PAPER GROUP Ltd. 29 May, 1968 [9 June, 1967], No. 26846/67. Heading B8C. Bag filling apparatus includes means to raise a flat bag to an opening position adjacent a filling spout, suction devices to open the bag by pulling apart the bag sides and a filling spout movable relative to the bag to enter the mouth. A stack of bags 8 enters the machine on a conveyer 9 and is checked by a stop beneath a suction cup 6 on a pivoted arm 2. The cup grips the bag and retracts and the arm pivots upwards until the cup is aligned with a further cup 12 adjacent a bag guide 10. The ends of the bag mouth are gripped by pairs of jaws 17, 18 on a carriage 15 running on rails 14 between the bag pick-up position and a filling position. The carriage supports also a filling spout 16. The cups move apart and the pairs of jaws approach each other so that the bag mouth is opened, permitting the spout to be lowered into it. The carriage now moves to beneath a hopper 48 and filling commences. During filling, the bag is supported by a conveyer 31 stationary in its normal direction of travel but vibrating to settle the contents and rising corresponding to diminution in height of the bag as it fills. After filling, the pairs of jaws move apart and then separate, thus flattening and releasing the bag mouth, the spout rises and gripper conveyers 34, 35 close in on the mouth to convey it to sewing means (not detailed) or a heater sealer. The conveyer 31 supports and moves the bag base until the weight of the bag is taken by a further conveyer beneath the sewing head. A single pair of cups 6, 12 may be used, but in a modification, Fig. 7, three pairs are employed, the central ones 51, 54 being joined to their reciprocating mechanisms but the others 50, 52, 53, 55 being supported from the cups 51, 54 by flexible plates 56, 57. As the cup assemblies part to open the bag mouth, stops 59 engage the plates causing the mouth to be opened to the shape shown.
