1294720 Aryl-butanol derivatives SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 3 Nov 1970 [4 Nov 1969 9 Dec 1969 10 Dec 1969 12 Dec 1969 13 May 1970] 52209/70 Heading C2C Compounds I in which Ar is furyl, thienyl or R 1 -C 6 H 4 -; R 1 is H, halo, 1-3 C alkyl, 1-3 C alkoxy or CF 3 ; R is H, 1-3 C alkyl, R 2 -C 6 H 4 - (R 2 is H, halo, 1-3 C alkyl or 1-3 C alkoxy) or 5-6 membered heterocyclyl containing at least one N, O or S atom and optionally substituted by 1-3 C alkyl; and m is 0, 1 or 2 or their acid addition salts are prepared by reacting compounds II with an oxidizing agent. Compounds II in which Ar is as above except that it is not furyl or thienyl, R is as above except that it is not a heterocyclyl group and m is 1 or 2 are claimed per se. Compounds II may be prepared by reduction of compound III 1 - (# - p - Fluorobenzoylpropionyl) -, 4 - (#- phenethyl)piperazine and 1 - (# - p - - fluorobenzoylpropionyl)-4-phenylpiperazine are prepared by reacting #-p-fluorobenzoylpropionic acid with (1) ethyl chlorocarbonate and (2) 1-(#- phenethyl)piperazine or 1-phenylpiperazine. Pharmaceutical compositions having CNS activity comprise one of the novel compounds II together with a suitable carrier and/or diluent for oral administration as anti-anxiety, antipsychotonic, anti-emotional, anti-convulsive, anti-psychosis or analgesic drugs.
