Abstract

1292278 Combustion chambers operating under pressure SPERRY RAND Ltd 26 Nov 1969 [5 Dec 1968 1 May 1969] 57731/68 Heading F1L A gas generator comprises a combustion chamber in which, eams are provided for supplying in use gas to the combustion chamber at a temperature sufficient to effect continued and complete combustion of fuel. In Fig.1 the gas generator comprises a combustion chamber 1 having an outlet nozzle 2, 3 and a fuel inlet nozzle 4. Hot gas is supplied to the combustion chamber 1 through a duct 6 having a restriction 7 from an auxiliary gas generator 5. Fuel such as iso-propyl nitrate is contained in container 11 which is divided into two compartments 19, 22 by two pistons 16, 17, fuel passing from compartment 22 to gas generator 1 through line 12 containing valve 13, and fuel passing from compartment 19 to auxiliary gas generator 5 through line 14 containing valve 15. Combustion in the auxiliary gas cenerator is started by firing a cartridge in breech 9 the resulting gases passing through line 10 to the gas generator 5 and thence through line 6 to the main gas generator 1. A portion of gases from line 6 passes through line 21 to the space between pistons 16, 17 whereby the fuel compartments are pressurized and fuel passes to the auxiliary generator 5 where it is fired by the hot gases issuing from the breech 9; fuel also passes to the main generator 1 where it is fired by the hot gases issuing from the auxiliary chamber 5 through line 6. The area at the left hand side of the piston 16 is reduced compared with that at the right hand side by means of a piston rod 18 thus ensuring that the fuel in compartment 19 is at greater pressure than that in auxiliary generator 5. In Fig. 2 the fuel container 24 for the main gas generator 1 is separate from the container 23 for the auxiliary gas generator 5, but both are pressurized by gas from the auxiliary generator, the container 24 being of the diaphragm type and container 23 of the piston type.
