Abstract
1421719 Ramjet units D B WILKINSON 23 Aug 1974 [28 Aug 1973] 37258/74 Heading F1J [Also in Division F3] A solid fuel ramjet powered missile comprises: a fuel grain 20 with an air passage 35 therethrough; a secondary combustor 26; an air inlet 28 with means 30 for directing a major portion of the air into the secondary combustor; and a channel 34 for providing primary air to the forward end of the fuel grain. A valve 37, responsive to a command signal from a flight control section of the missile or responsive to a pre-set program, controls the supply of primary air to provide a constant thrust as the area of the fuel grain changes with burning. The fuel grain comprises magnesium and aluminium with a rubber binder; a small amount of oxidizer may be added in an amount insufficient to maintain combustion in the absence of air. The missile can be adapted for use with a rocket-ramjet engine by providing a rocket fuel grain in chamber 26 and configuring nozzle 24 for hybrid operation.
