Abstract

1291022 Foundry mould composition TSENTRALNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT TEKHNOLOGII MASCHINOSTROENIA 15 April 1971 9531/71 Heading C3N A self-hardening foundry mould composition comprises moulding sand, orthophosphoric acid, and ferrous oxide or a material containing not less than 30% by weight ferrous oxide. Iron scale containing 30-70% by weight ferrous oxide may be used as the ferrous oxide-containing material. The ferrous oxide is preferably incorporated in a finely pulverized form, preferably having a specific surface area of 500 to 3000 cm.<SP>2</SP>/gm. Use may also be made of naturally occurring ores such as magnetite, ilmenite, siderite and chrome iron ore provided that they contain not less than 30% by weight of ferrous oxide. The most suitable ferrous oxide content of the mixture is 1À5-6% by weight of the moulding sand. The orthophosphoric acid is preferably used in an amount 2-10% by weight of the moulding sand and its concentration may vary within the range 30-80% by weight. The composition may also include an oxide or hydroxide of a metal, such as calcium, cadmium, zinc or copper, to improve the strength of the moulds formed from the composition preferably in an amount 0À005-0À12% of the weight of the moulding sand or a foaming agent such as sodium alkyl aryl sulphonate, preferably in an amount 0À1-1% by weight of the moulding sand. Alternatively a polyhydric alcohol, such as ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol or glycerine, may be used instead of the metal oxides and hydroxides referred to above, preferably in an amount 0À5-3% of the weight of the moulding sand.
