Abstract

1289238 Seaming non-metallic sheet material TRIANGLE PACKAGE MACHINERY CO 19 April 1971 [27 May 1970] 23074/71 Heading B5K [Also in Division B8] A multiple ply web is advanced and transversely sealed to form bags by sealing elements 25-30 carried by rotary shafts 14, 16 which are initially moved apart and then moved towards one another so that the elements clamping the web move in a linear path. The shafts 14, 16 are rotatably mounted in sleeves 15, 18 connected by arms 45, 48 to further sleeves 45, 48 which rotatably support further shafts 40, 41 and which are connected by levers 58, 53 to an adapter 57 carried by the piston 83 of a pneumatic cylinder. Thus when the piston 83 is advanced the sleeves 45, 48 are pivoted to move the shafts 14, 16 apart, retraction of the piston causing the shafts 14, 16 to be moved together. The shafts 40, 41 are rotated by a motor-driven chain 69 and are connected to the shafts 14, 16 by a gear train (Fig. 4). The cylinder 82 forms a stop for the adapter 87 and thus by adjusting the height of the cylinder 82 the extent to which the shafts 14, 16 can be brought together is adjusted, and hence the length of the bags formed is adjusted. This adjustment can be made automatically by a detector 96 sensing marks on the web and momentarily closing a valve 91 in an oil-line connecting the ends of a cylinder 86, the piston 87 of which then stops the adapter 57. The sealing elements include cutters for severing the web.
