Abstract

1289038 Catheter placement apparatus LE VOYS Inc 30 Sept 1970 [17 Dec 1969] 46560/ 70 Heading A5R A catheter placement unit comprises a hollow hub 9 having an inlet for receiving a catheter with a protective disruptible sheath therearound, separating means in the form of a cannulated needle 10 to effect disruption of such a sheath and separation thereof from the catheter when such a catheter and sheath are advanced into the hub inlet, and first and second outlets for the catheter and the sheath respectively after such separation. A catheter hub 1 includes a generally cylindrical barrel 2 provided with an interior annular shoulder 3, and an inwardly extending hollow nipple 5 in which the proximal end of the catheter 6 is firmly anchored. Also, within the barrel 2 is a narrow stop member 8a and around the nipple 5 is a floating washer 8. The hub 9 has a slot 13 with an inclined lower face 14 and is also provided with a locking member in the form of a washer 16 disposed around the blunt end of the needle shaft. A short cylinder (17) having an oblique end (18) secured in a hollow portion (15) of the hub 9 is provided with a plurality of resilient latching fingers 20 for interlocking with the annular shoulder 3 of the hub 1. The catheter 6 is encased in a sheath 22 which maintains the catheter sterile, the sheath being provided with a slit 23 which is maintained closed by the resiliency of the material of the sheath. The sheath is removably attached to the nipple 5 of the catheter hub 1 by means of the floating washer 8, the other end of said sheath being free and projecting out from said slot 13 in the needle hub 9. Alternatively the sheath 22 may be attached to the nipple 5 by an elastic sleeve (30), Fig. 6 (not shown), fitted around the nipple. The sheath is released from the nipple 5, and therefore from the catheter hub, when the two hubs are interlocked, the latching fingers 20 releasing the floating washer 8 or the elastic sleeve (30). In an alternative embodiment the washer 8 is omitted and the nipple 5 is replaced with a tapered floating member (27), Fig. 4 (not shown), the sheath 22 being locked between the tapered member and a sleeve (25) disposed within the catheter hub.
