Abstract

1286986 Preventing entry of air to furnaces MIDLAND-ROSS CORP 3 Oct 1969 [13 Nov 1968] 48677/69 Heading F4B The outlet aperture, of a controlled atmosphere furnace, is provided with apertured pipes 54, 56 to produce a resultant high velocity gas curtain directed across and at least slightly outwardly of the aperture, to prevent ingress of air. The gas stream from rotatable pipe 56 may be of an inert or non-oxidizing gas whilst that from pipe 54 may be a flame curtain if the furnace atmosphere is combustible. The aperture in the water cooled door frame 46 is closable by an hydraulically slidable door 28, the movement of which controls the gas supply to the apertured pipes 54, 56. Movement of the door may also control the addition of atmosphere restoring gas from pipe 62 to the normal furnace atmosphere gas supplied through pipe 60, to compensate for atmospheric disturbances caused by opening door 28. Alternatively the restoring gas flow may be controlled by an atmosphere sensor (not shown). In modifications, (Figs. 5-10, not shown) alternative locations for and combinations of curtain producing gas pipes are disclosed. The furnace, which may be used for carburizing, nitriding, bright annealing, normalizing, or hardening may be of the rotary hearth type (Fig. 3, not shown) or a tunnel furnace. In the latter case the aperture is located in a vestibule 22 adjacent to but closed off from the main tunnel portion.
