Abstract

1286870 Constant tension winches; transhipping at sea CANADA NATIONAL DEFENCE MINISTER OF 5 Dec 1969 59531/69 Headings B8B and B8E Apparatus for the transference of a load carriage 15 between relatively moving supply and receiving ships comprises a system for automatically maintaining constant tension in the transfer cable 7 and constant transfer velocity of the carriage 15. The latter rolls along a portion of the cable 7 extending between the tension winch 19 on the supply ship and a roller 11 on the receiving ship, the cable portion thereafter extending to the carriage 15, from which a further cable portion extends to the velocity winch 5 on the supply ship. The cable 7 extending from the tension winch 19 passes around a pneumatically powered cable accumulator 31 for absorbing sudden tension increases, and over a pulley 9 associated with a load cell 45. The latter generates a signal proportional to the cable tension which is electrically compared with a preset tension value and any resulting difference signal causes a variation in the output from an hydraulic pump 23 driving the hydraulic motor 21 of the winch 19 to maintain the cable tension constant. An alternative or additional arrangement for generating a cable tension signal for comparison comprises a tacho-generator 71, 73 associated with the drum of the winch 19 and the pulley 9, any cable velocity variation therebetween, due to the cable accumulation, action, being representative of tension variation in the cable. The drum of the velocity winch 5 is also driven from an hydraulic pump 103 having its output automatically variable under the control of a signal resulting from the comparison of a pre-set velocity signal and a signal derived from a tachogenerator on the velocity drum. In operation, the desired transfer velocity is set for the velocity winch, which velocity is automatically maintained whilst resulting variation in cable tension is compensated for the automatic tension control system.
