Abstract

1286839 Respiratory apparatus DYNASCIENCES CORP 18 Nov 1969 56341/69 Heading A5T Respiratory apparatus incorporates a valve 10 comprising a housing 26 having a high pressure oxygen inlet port 42 and an outlet port 62 to a patient, and containing a valve member 32 movable between an open position (Fig. 3, not shown) and a closed position, Fig. 2, in which it is balanced, such that a slight drop in pressure at the outlet port 62 caused by attempted inspiration of the patient will lift the valve slightly from its seat 52, the valve member having a port 38 cooperating with the inlet port 42 so that the upstream side of the valve member is not subjected to high pressure oxygen until it is lifted from its seat, when the oxygen enters the housing and lifts the valve member fully open. The valve member 32 may be balanced by a magnet 66 on it cooperating with attracting and repelling magnets 74 and 72 respectively above and below it. Outlet port 62 is connected by way of a valve section 78 and tube 92 to a face mask (94) Fig. 1 (not shown). The patient exhales through a valve 80 in valve section 78, which valve 80 is controlled by a diaphragm 86 over the end of a tube 24 connected to a port 44 in the valve housing 26 spaced relative to the oxygen inlet port 42 and valve member port 38 and an additional port 46 opening to the atmosphere, such that when valve member 32 is closed, tube 24 communicates with the atmosphere and diaphragm 86 is relaxed to allow exhaled gases to pass through the orifice 82, and when valve member 32 is open (Fig. 2), tube 24 communicates with the high pressure oxygen duct 42 and the diaphragm is distended to cover hole 80.
