Abstract

1285698 Multi-cylinder reciprocating pump or motor CAM GEARS Ltd 16 Oct 1969 [25 Oct 1968] 50679/68 Heading F1A A reversible multi-cylinder reciprocating pump or motor comprises a rotary cylinder block 5 keyed at 4 to a shaft 1, each cylinder 7 having a ball-ended or ball piston 6 reciprocated by means of a multi-lobed axially acting cam track 8, and a distributing valve ring 9 having alternate inlet and outlet bores 5A, 5B. The valve ring 9 is non-rotatably fixed with respect to a cover-plate 10 by means of a pin 11, but has a small amount of axial play, the valve ring 9 being maintained in contact with the cylinder block 5 during use by the pressure of liquid in inlet and outlet manifolds 14A, 15A acting on the annular surfaces F and E respectively. Liquid leaking across the interface between the cylinder block 5 and valve ring 9 accumulates in the centre 14 of the valve ring 9 and when the pressure in this space exceeds the input pressure the liquid is returned to the inlet manifold via a non-return valve 12 or 13 depending on the direction of flow. The cam track Fig. 3A (not shown) has relatively sharp peaks and smooth troughs.
