1284868 Milling cutters J FIORAVANTI R L CARRIERE P THIBAULT and A J-F R FIORAVANTI 9 Sept 1970 [24 Dec 1969] 43178/70 Heading B3K [Also in Division B7] Ice-milling augers 12 are provided at the bows of an ice-breaker and each comprise several threads having knives, e.g. of tungsten carbide, attached to their edges in such a way that they are spaced apart on a thread by the width of a knife and a knife of one thread is level with a space on adjacent threads. The augers 12 are driven so that they assist the forward passage of the ship, the ice fragments being conveyed up or down by the augers. The bow of the ship may be provided, above the general ice level, with vanes 115, 116 on endless driven chains 111, 112 to cut through hummocks on the surface of the ice.
