Abstract

1,264,783. Comminuting sheet material. CALMEC EXTRUFORM Ltd. 20 March, 1969 [22 Dec., 1967], No. 58319/67. Heading B2A. Sheet material is comminuted by slitting by interengaging cutters 13, 15, Fig. 1, and transverse cutting by a roller cutter 91 which has helical blades causing cutting at a plurality of points progressively along a cutting edge 85 of a cutter strip 56. The material is led between nip rollers 7, 9 and thence to the adjustable cutters 13, 15 which comprise shafts 17, 19 having spaced cutter discs 27 Fig. 2 and spaces 29 Slotted guide plates 51, 53 prevent the strips jamming in the spaces between successive cutter discs. The roller cutter 91 has its cutting blades 95 extending helically at a steep pitch angle along its length and is adjustable relative to the strip 56. It is driven at about three times the speed of the cutters 13, 15 and thus severs the strips into pieces shorter than the strip widths The rollers and cutters are driven via a system of chains and sprockets by a motor 101 but alternatively may be driven by gears or hydraulic motors.. The cutters 13, 15 are cooled by liquid circulated through hollow shafts. Reciprocating cutters may be used in place of the rotary interengageine cutters.
