Abstract

1284775 Epoxy resin polyamide dispersions ARMOUR INDUSTRIAL CHEMICAL CO 31 Oct 1969 [1 Nov 1968] 53444/69 Headings C3B and C3R [Also in Division C2] Stable aqueous dispersions comprise stoichiometric quantities of epoxy resin and polyamide resin having a particle size <10 Á and 0À05- 10% by wt. of the total composition of an aralkyl diquaternary ammonium compound, e.g. a phenylstearyl compound such as N-9(10)- phenylstearyl-N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>-pentamethyl trimethylene diquaternary ammonium chloride. The epoxy resin may be a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A having an epoxide equivalent of 100- 1500 and the polyamide may be a reaction product of a dimeric fatty acid and diethylene triamine having an amine value of 5-200. The dispersions may be prepared by first forming separate dispersions of the epoxy resin and the polyamide by heating the resin to >75‹ F. in excess of its ball and ring softening point and then mixing 0À25-75% by wt. (of the total composition), of resin, 0À05-10% by wt. of diquaternary ammonium compound and 50- 99% of water at 120-160‹ F. through a colloid mill having a head clearance of 0À005-0À012 inches, 5-30 p.s.i.g. head pressure and 5-15 p.s.i.g. back pressure. The resultant dispersions are then cooled and combined in stoichiometric proportions.
