Abstract

1461823 Coating composition DULUX AUSTRALIA Ltd 4 June 1974 [4 June 1973] 24628/74 Heading C3B An aqueous coating composition comprises: (I) an ionizable epoxy-amine adduct of formula wherein A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP> and A<SP>3</SP> are the residues resulting from the adduction of substantially straight chain diepoxides with amino groups and are free from epoxy groups, B<SP>1</SP> and B<SP>2</SP> are residues resulting from the adduction of primary or secondary monoamines of pK b #4 with an epoxide group, and C<SP>1</SP> and C<SP>2</SP> are residues resulting from the adduction of diamines or primary monoamines with epoxide groups, the adduct having a M.W. of 1500-7000; (II) an acid, capable of ionizing the adduct, which has a pK a value of 1À5 to 6À0 and contains not more than two COOH groups when carboxylic, the acid being reacted with at least 40% of the amine groups in I to form a salt; and (III) a cross-linking agent for I. I may be prepared by reacting a diepoxide, e.g. a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, with equimolecular proportions of a secondary amine, e.g. diethylamine, and then reacting the product with a diamine, e.g. ethylene diamine or a primary monoamine, e.g. nbutylamine, in a quantity equivalent to the residual epoxide content of the intermediate. II may be phosphoric, lactic, dimethylolpropionic or acetic acid. III may be a phenolformaldehyde condensate or an aminoplast resin. In preparing the coating composition I may first be formed, as above, III added and then finally the mixture acidified with II. The aqueous compositions formed are suitable for cathodic deposition.
