Abstract

1462538 Epoxy resins DOW CHEMICAL CO 24 May 1974 23360/74 Heading C3B A thermosettable composition contains either an epoxy resin of general formula wherein A is a divalent C 1-6 aliphatic hydrocarbon group, S, S 2 , SO 2 , SO, or O, Q is the residue obtained after removing the carboxyl groups of a dibasic aromatic or cycloaliphatic acid, each R is independently, H, a C 1-6 aliphatic hydrocarbon group, Cl or Br, n is an integer such that the epoxide equivalent weight of the resin is at least 700 and x is 0 or 1; or an epoxy resin of general formula wherein each R, Q and n are as defined above and each R<SP>1</SP> is independently H or a C 1-6 aliphatic hydrocarbon group and each m has an average value of 0À01-6. The composition has a Durran's softening point of at least 80‹ C. I and II may be prepared by reacting either a diglycidyl ether of a hydrogenated bisphenol or a polyglycidyl ether of a hydrogenated novolac with an aromatic or cycloaliphatic dibasic acid, e.g. isophthalic acid, at 80-210‹ C. The compositions are useful in powder coatings using conventional epoxy resin curing agents or catalysts.
