Abstract

1283031 Automatic voltage control JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 22 July 1969 [26 April 1968] 19833/68 Heading G3R A battery charging circuit includes a bridge network connected across the battery and responsive to the battery voltage to control the gating signal to a thyristor which is connected in series with the battery. In the embodiment shown, a resistive bridge is constituted by the two parts of a potentiometer 23, a resistor 26 and a lamp 25, which may be replaced by a negative temperature coefficient resistor and a normal resistor in another part of the bridge. The variable point on the potentiometer is set so that when the voltage of the battery 18 is below the fully charged value, the bridge is out of balance, rendering a transistor 24 conductive and thus supplying gating current to the thyristor 19. When the desired battery voltage is reached, the bridge is balanced and the transistor cuts off so that charging ceases. As the transistor cuts off gradually, the charging current is reduced by phase control of the thyristor Thermistors may be used in the bridge or near the battery to provide thermal compensation.
