Abstract

1330131 Control of D.C. motors CABLEFORM Ltd 16 Sept 1970 [23 Sept 1969 6 Feb 1970 7 Feb 1970 14 Feb 1970] 46727/69 5741/70 5990/70 and 7188/70 Heading H2J A series or shunt motor A is supplied from battery B through a thyristor switch S, while detector D provides a signal V1 representing the peak motor current, this signal being applied to an amplifier G which also receives a threshold signal VR corresponding to the current at which maximum design horse-power is reached. Until the signal V1 exceeds the signal VR, there is no output from the amplifier G so that the switch S is controlled entirely by a demand signal obtained from a control pedal. When the signal V1 exceeds the signal VR, the demand signal is modified by the output of amplifier G whereby the motor voltage decreases with increasing current. The degree of voltage reduction is determined by the gain of amplifier G which is set by adjustment of feedback H. Typical speed-current characteristics for shunt and series motors are described, Fig. 2 (not shown). A fuse FS in the battery circuit has a lower rating than the maximum motor current. Similar fuses may interconnect adjacent cells of the battery, Fig. 4 (not shown). A PTC thermistor TH responds to the temperature of the heat sink of the thyristors, the motor or other part to be protected. If the temperature exceeds a predetermined level, the demand signal is modified to reduce the current from the switch S. Alternatively, an output stage of the amplifier G contains the thermistor. If desired VR may be obtained from a plurality of thermistors sensing the temperature of various parts of the apparatus. Typical characteristics relating speed or duty cycle to current are discussed for a series motor, its supply battery and the thyristor switch operating at a constant recommended temperature, Fig. 3 (not shown).
