Abstract

The semi-conductor control element, e.g. a series transistor or thyristor of a regulated power supply unit has a heat sink which is thermally associated with a temperature sensitive device, e.g. a thermistor or P.T.C. resistor, which is arranged to initiate turning-off of the control element when the temperature of the heat sink exceeds a predetermined maximum value. As shown, a supply unit comprises input terminals 1, 2, output terminals 3, 4, a series transistor VT2 controlled in known manner by a circuit including a comparator C and an amplifier A, a thermistor TH mounted on the heat sink of the transistor VT2, and a further transistor VT1 which is inter-connected with the thermistor TH and the transistor VT2. When the temperature of the heat sink reaches a desired maximum value the change in base voltage, due to the reduction in resistance of the thermistor TH, of the transistor VT1 is such that the latter commences to conduct; current is thus diverted from the base of transistor VT2 so that the output current from the unit is reduced, as is also the power to be dissipated in the transistor VT2.
