Abstract
128,246. Armstrong, Whitworth, & Co., Sir W. G., and Simson, G. June 29, 1917. Ordnance muzzle shutters.-Relates to means for actuating muzzle shutters, particularly those used with guns mounted on submarine vessels, and consists in employing near the muzzle of the gun a power cylinder with two pistons, the shutter being carried by one of the piston-rods and actuated by the other. Fig. 3 shows the shutter I pivotally mounted at J on a cross-head E sliding in guides F beneath the gun muzzle. The power cylinder A has a rear piston B connected by its rod D to the cross-head E and a front piston C, the hollow rod G of which is connected to an arm H on the shutter. When pressure fluid is admitted to the cylinder A through a flexible pipe K, the pistons B, C move forward together and slide the shutter from its housed position below the gun muzzle. The piston C moves forward alone when the piston B reaches the by-passes N, and the shutter is then rocked on its pivot J to close the muzzle. The parts are returned when pressure fluid is admitted to the front end of the cylinder by a flexible pipe L, the piston C being sufficiently long to render the by-passes N inoperative,
