Abstract

14,279. Bacon, R. H. S., and Redpath, R. June 13. Ordnance breech mechanism. - Relates to the semi-automatic type in which the breech is automatically opened by a ram acted upon by the fluid pressure set up when the gun moves forward after recoil. The invention consists in mounting the ram in the rear end of a cylinder moving with the gun. In the form shown, the gun carries an hydraulic cylinder a which, during recoil, moves with respect to a piston b slidably mounted on the rear of a rod attached to the cradle. The piston b acts as a valve which opens to allow free passage of liquid during recoil, but closes during run-out so that a pressure is set up in front of a ram d, which is thereby moved to lower the wedge through the toothed sectors f, g, the latter acting upon the arm h. An arm m on the sector g engages with a spring-controlled bar l on the cradle and stores up energy to close the breech after the insertion of a new cartridge has caused the toes n on the extractor to leave the recess o in the wedge. The breech may be closed by hand through the lever k.
