Abstract

1281015 Warning lamps for bicycles; battery lamps P H MAC MAHON 23 July 1969 [29 Oct 1968] 36975/69 Heading F4R A warning lamp adapted to be attached to the outer end of a bicycle pedal comprises a translucent box-like housing 26 which has an opening 70 in each end wall 28, 30 and contains a pair of batteries 52, a gravity-actuated switch 46, and a pair of bulb socket shells 62 holding bulbs 68 which project partially through the openings. The socket shells are electrically connected by brackets 56 to respective terminals 60 of the batteries and are secured to a U-shaped connector 66 by means of centre contacts (not shown), insulating spacers 64 being provided. The assembly consisting of the connector 66, the brackets 56, the shells 62 and the bulbs 68 is held in the housing by the engagement of the bulbs with the openings 70, the connector 66 being sufficiently resilient to permit the bulbs to be moved towards one another to disengage the assembly from the housing when required. The switch 46 comprises an arm pivoted on one of a pair of posts 40 which are secured to the housing and are electrically connected to the adjacent terminals of the batteries and to each other. When the arm is at the lower side of the housing it rests clear of the connector 66 but if the pedal is rotated through 180 degrees to bring the arm to the upper side it then rests on the connector and completes the circuit to the bulbs. The outer end of the crank-pin (10) of the pedal may carry cam projections 75 so that as the pedals rotate the switch arm is periodically lifted clear of the connector 66 to flash the bulbs.
