Abstract

1280374 Combustible gas ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 19 April 1971 [27 Jan 1970] 3823/70 Heading C5E Fuel gases 23 substantially free of sulphur and tars are produced by partially combusting a liquid or solid hydrocarbon 10 in a fluidized bed 12 which includes CaO partices e.g. calcined dolomite, at a temperature in the range 800‹ to 950‹ C., and passing the gases through a second fluidized bed 20 held at a temperature below 600‹ C. to condense tars on to the particles. Particles circulate between the beds 12, 20 by the lines 26a, 26b to prevent build-up of tar in the bed 20, and particles from the bed 12 are regenerated by O 2 in a fluidized bed 31, the temperature of which is held in the range 1000‹ to 1150‹ C. The bed 20 has a cooling coil 24, and the apparatus has temperature-responsive elements 25, 38, 43 which control temperatures in the beds 20, 30, 12 through valves 27, 39 (which regulates a propellant gas, e.g. air or steam, to circulate particles in lines 41, 42), and 16. Propellant gas is regulated in lines 26a, 26b by pressure-responsive elements 28, 27a, and offgases at 37 are monitored for SO 2 or O 2 content by infra-red meter 36 which controls a valve 34.
