Abstract
1403992 Methane-rich pipe-line gas INSTITUTE OF GAS TECHNOLOGY 4 Aug 1972 36514/72 Heading C5E A methane-rich synthetic pipe-line gas is produced by (a) contacting a liquid fossil fuel with a H 2 -rich gas in a first chamber in the presence of circulating solids to give the methane-rich gas and a carbonaceous residue, (b) passing the carbonaceous residue together with the circulating solids directly to a second chamber where they are contacted with a free O 2 - containing gas and steam to produce a gaseous mixture, the circulating solids functioning as a heat transfer medium and a portion thereof being passed directly from the second chamber to the first, and (c) passing the gaseous mixture from the second chamber and reacting it in order to produce directly or indirectly the H 2 - rich gas used in (a). The liquid fuel may be a distribute, crude or residual petroleum oil. A pulverized solid fuel, e.g. bituminous coal, char, lignite or oil shale may be added to the second chamber to supplement the carbonaceous residue. A pulverized solid refractory, e.g. Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 or MgO may be introduced into the second chamber. The circulating solids which may be the refractory or the spent solid-fuel may be maintained in a fluidized state in the first chamber with the H 2 -rich gas. When the free- O 2 gas in the second chamber is O 2 the gaseous mixture formed therein includes H 2 , CH 4 , CO and CO 2 which undergoes a shift reaction in the third chamber to provide the H 2 -rich gas. When the gas in the second chamber is air, the gaseous mixture includes N 2 , CO and CO 2 which can be used to reduce iron oxide which has been formed by converting steam to H 2 over reduced iron oxides, the steam being the direct source of the H 2 -rich gas.
