Abstract

1280330 Sammying machines for leather P BOCCIARDO 4 Nov 1969 [8 Nov 1968, 7 Oct 1969] 54093/69 Heading C6C A machine for sammying leather, hides and the like comprises a pair of superposed endless travelling belts 1, 2 of porous material pervious to water arranged to present two superposed runs travelling in the direction Al between which the leather &c. is fed from an inlet section 3, formed by an extension of the lower belt 2, to an outlet end between exit rollers 401, 402, and a plurality of pairs of co-operating driven press rolls 11-21, 12-22, 13-23 between which the superposed belt runs pass, of which the lower roller 21, 22, 23 in each case is urged towards the corresponding upper roller to exert a squeezing pressure on the leather, the pressure applied to the rollers 21, 22, 23 increasing progressively in the direction of feed of the leather. The apparatus is adjustable as to the number of pairs of rollers, their spacing and the pressures applied to the leather. For this purpose, the pairs of rollers are mounted on separate frames F1, F2, F3 which are adjustable longitudinally, the frames F1, F3 carrying the belt supporting rollers in addition to the press rolls, separate sliding carriages 7, 8 being provided on the frame F1 for the rollers 101, 102 which are tensioning rollers. The two press rolls of each pair are driven separately by hydraulic motors 14, 24 which are connected hydraulically in series and controlled by a valve V1 from a supply comprising pump PV and pressure regulating valve RV1. The pressure applied to the lower roll of each pair is obtained from a second supply comprising a pump PF, a regulating valve R V2 set for the particular pressure required, and a three-way valve V2, this pressure being applied to two cylinders 6 via a reservoir 15, divided by a diaphragm 115 into a lower hydraulic chamber 315 and an upper pneumatic chamber 215, so that pressure remains substantially constant during changes in thickness of the leather. Cylinders 6 contain pistons 106 which act via piston rods 206 on levers 5 which are secured to a shaft 105 and carry the lower roll journals. Lateral stretching of the leather is effected prior to its entering between the belts by a roller 16 provided with helical ribs which are divided into two sections of opposite hand on opposite sides of the centre of the length of the roller.
