RUDOLPH OPPENHEIM, OF DIXON, ILLINOIS.
EXPRESSING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,530, dated November 8, 1904.
Application filed May 29, 1902. Serial No. 109,448. (No model.)
sugar, combining the feature of adjustable compression-rollers with extended stiff surfaces, upon which the material is held and compressed. WVhile the machine shown has been designed particularly for use in connection with the refining of sugar, it will be understood that the same is also applicable to other purposes for which expressing-machines are used.
I accomplish the foregoing objects by means of the device 7 shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of part of the continuous compression-belt.
The device shown in the drawings consists mainly of a supporting-frame 1, drums 3, 4, 5, and 6, continuous belts 7 and 8, mounted upon said drums and comprising a series of plates 43, pivotally connected by the links 44, adjustable compression-rollers acting on said plates, and the tanks 9 and 10, in which is gathered the liquid expressed by said machine. The drums are journaled at 11 and 11 in the frame 1. The drum 3 is rigidly mounted on its shaft, as are also the sprocket-wheel 12 and a gear-wheel 13. The gear 30 is in mesh with the gear-wheel14, which is rigidly mounted on the shaft of the drum 4. The sprocket-chain 15 connects the drum 3 with suitable driving mechanism. (Not shown.) The drums 3, 4, 5, and 6 are provided with lugs 16 for engaging the edges 17 of the plates The rollers 19, 20, and 21 are journaled n fixed bearings 42 in the uprights 22 of the frame. The rollers 23, 24, and 25 are journaled in movable bearing-blocks 26, which are vertically slidable in the uprights 22. Said bearing-blocks are normally urged downward by means of the springs 27, which bear upwardly against the vertically-adjustable heads 28. The heads 28 have a swivel connection with the shanks of the screws 29, which are threaded into the member 30 of the frame. The screws 29 are provided with hand-wheels 31 at their upper ends. The plates 43 of-the continuous belts are connected together by means of the links 44 and pivots 33 and have their edges 17 separated a considerable distance, so as to leave space for the flow of liquid between the lower belt and into the tanks 9 and 10. The tank 9 is supported by a hanger 34 and is provided with an outlet-pipe 35.
36 represents one of the canvas bags used for containing the material from which the liquid is to be expressed.
The reference-numeral 37 represents idlers journaled in the upwardly-projecting arms 30 of the frame, which aid in supporting the belts 7. The bearings 11 are adjustable and consist of slidable bearingblocks 38, normally urged to the left by the springs 39. The springs 39 are adjustable by means of the movable heads 40 and the screws 41.
The operation of the device shown is as follows: The material from which the liquid is to be expressed is placed in flexible casings or bags 36, which bags are preferably of the form known as seamless bags, open at one end. These bags are partly filled with material, usually to about two-thirds of their full capacity. The bags are then fed into the machine from the left of Fig. 1, with the open end of the bag facing outwardly or toward the left of said figure, the bags being carried between the belts 7, as shown. The roller 23 will be adjusted to have less pressure toward its compression-roller 19 than the roller 25 has toward its compression-roller 21. The roller 24 is adjusted slightly closer to its compression-roller than the roller 23'. It will be seen that when the sprocket-chain 15 is driven in the direction of the arrow the belts 7 will carry the bag 36 toward the right of Fig. 1, and the bags will be discharged at the right T00 said bag and thence through the spaces between the plates 43 of the lower belt. 'Most of the liquid will be gathered in. the tank 9.
The tank is provided for gathering any liquid which may drip from the belt after passing between the rollers and 21. The rollers will be adjusted to the desired pressure by means of the hand-wheels 31.
It will be understood that some of the details of the device shown may be altered without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore do not confine myself to such details, except as hereinafter limited in the claims.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Ina machine of the type set forth, a frame having side members, upwardlyprojecting arms carried by the upper of said members, rollers journaled in the upper ends of said arms, alining rollers journaled at points be tween said members, drums mounted in the ends of the frame, belts passing over all of said drums, the upper belts engaging the rollers, means for imparting movement to said. belts, a bracket depending from the lower of said frame members, a tank mounted on said bracket, and a larger tank disposed beneath said bracket and projecting beyond the ends thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In amachine of the type set forth, a frame comprising end standards connected by spacedapart side members, uprights connecting said last-named members, rollers journaled in said uprights, said rollers being arranged in pairs with one of each pair arranged above the other, the upper rollers being adjustable, drums journaled in the ends of the frame, arms formed integral with the upper of said members of the frame, rollers journaled in the upper ends of said arms, belts passing over said drums and engaging all of said rollers, a member extending parallel to the first-named members and being arranged beneath the same, said last-named member carrying rollers engaging the lower of said belt-s, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
