Abstract

1279785 Pipe couplings and junction pieces VEREINIGTE DEUTSCHE METALLWERKE AG 4 June 1971 [5 June 1970] 19119/71 Heading F2G A flanged pipe-coupling or junction piece is made of a cross-linked thermoplastic plastics material having a memory such that upon heating to a temperature at about or above the crystallite melting point it assumes a rubberelastic state and upon cooling returns to its original state and properties. A locking member 5 is applied over the flange 3 when the latter is in the rubber-elastic condition. As shown, the coupling may comprise two or more junction branches 2 which are to be connected to flanged pipe ends 1 which may be of any desired material. The locking member 5 may be a lock nut having a thrust ring portion 6 co-operating with a cap nut 4 bearing on a thrust ring 8 on the pipe 1. The flanges 3 are thus urged together to compress an intermediate sealing element. In alternative arrangements the sealing element may be located in an annular recess or counterbore portion in the flange end face. The plastics material of the coupling may be cross-linked polyethylene and heating to the crystallite melting point may be effected by applying a naked flame or by hot-bath immersion.
