Abstract

127,957. Farquhar, M. G., and Hill, A. H. June 6, 1918. Machine guns. - Relates to automatic guns of the kind having the breech opening and closing springs and the sliding breech-cover described in Specifications 2 8 5 8 7 / 0 7 , 17211/09, 9118/10, 27972/11, 28792/12 and 126,055, [all in Class 119, Smallarms], and consists in inverting the breech-body and bolt-cover and operating the cartridge-feed and firing-mechanisms from above the bolt instead of below, as in the above-mentioned guns. Fig. 4 shows the inverted breech-body b on which slides the bolt-cover c operated by a rod v connected to the breech-opening spring of the above-mentioned guns, buffers e<2> being provided to absorb the shock when the cover c is forced back. The cartridges are fed from a magazine rotating on a pivot 6, which magazine may be that described in Specification 119,960. The firing-mechanism. which is arranged ia a casing above the breech-body, comprises a spring-controlled hammer l pivoted at m and controlled by an automatic sear u<1> which is released from a bent l<2> at the end of the closing movement of the sleeve c, by tripping a lever u arranged outside the casing, as shown in Fig. 5. The hammer is also controlled by a hand sear n operated from the trigger a through a lever k and spring-controlled link p. For changing from continuous fire to single-shot fire, a cut-away pin r is rotated so that it lies in the path of a projection p<2> on the link p, thus causing the link to rise and disengage the sear n during the pull of the trigger. By rotating a safety bolt t, the lever k may be locked against firing movement. When automatic fire only is desired, the lever k and its connexions with the hammer may be dispensed with, the trigger in this case acting upon a simple pivoted sear a<1> engaging a projection c<2> on the bolt-cover when the trigger is released. The backsight 8 and the foresight 9, Fig. 1, may be turned down when not in use, the foresight, being held in the raised and lowered positions by a V-shaped spring catch. A cover z may be provided over the spring y<1> of the catch y of the automatic mechanism.
